The inaugural race in 1980 was created for the women. This race was named after Queen Ka`ahumanu, born on Maui and the favorite wife of King Kamehameha. The race course is a 6-woman iron canoe race (no water changes) from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor, which is approx. 9 miles. This is a great downwind race usually with wind at your back and waves to surf. Canoes can drift in too close to shore, they can get caught by the surf.

Divisions include Novice Women (Open steersperson encouraged, male steersperson allowed), Open Women, 40+ Master Women and 50+ Women’s crews. OC-6 canoes only.

Canvas is mandatory.

Escorts are not allowed.

The women enjoy brunch and awards after the race at NKE’s hale.
